My Commitment... and Yours My commitment to the AIDSRide event stems from the realization that the AIDS epidemic continues to mercilessly destroy human life more widely than ever before. All the while, public awareness about the disease may have waned over the years, lending the misconception that medical research and technology has already begun to eliminate the epidemic. The truth is sadly contrary and alarming. In the last 19 years, AIDS has claimed the lives of over 16-million men, women and children worldwide. In the the same time period, AIDS has killed over 430,000 people in the United States alone. An estimated 33-million people are living with HIV and AIDS today. AIDS is a communicable disease, indiscriminately affecting people regardless of their race, age, gender, culture, or sexual orientation. And while much progress has been made in the medical field regarding the treatment of HIV, the number of people currently inflicted with the disease is still higher than it has ever been. Only 12% of Americans currently living with HIV are under a doctor's care. 30% of individuals receiving the latest drug therapies will not be able to tolerate them. Additionally, up to 50% may not find such therapies effective over the long term. There has yet to be confirmation that new therapies have any long-term viability. This deadly equation clearly spells the need for continued and increased support from organizations that provide medical, social and advocacy services to all people inflicted with HIV and AIDS. I'm pleased to know that my efforts and donations -- and yours -- benefit three highly reputable organizations with a rich history in fulfilling the needs of HIV/AIDS patients in the Northeast: Callen-Lorde Community Health Center, the Lesbian & Gay Community Services Center, and Fenway Community Health.
