Team Wanka's "Hutty"		Unofficial Training Ride: SF-Tiburon Loop May 23, 2001 Today spawned not just one unofficial group training ride, but two. One several of us had planned the day before during our Alpine Loop training ride. The other happened by chance as a result of confusion surrounding the official training calendar, whose information I also erroneously published on the Bay Area AIDSRider Intranet. Although I had agreed to meet my group at Golden Gate Park's McLaren Lodge at 10:00 AM, I got there early. By the time I got there just before 9:00 AM, there were six riders waiting for ride leader, Michael England to show up for a ride up to Nicasio. 9:30 rolled around, and several riders who had planned to do the same, later Tiburon Loop on my agenda started showing up. Soon enough, we realized Michael's absence came as a result of an inaccurate calendar listing on the AIDSRide website -- the ride was really scheduled for Thursday, so confirmed both the printed calendar AND a phone message I got from Michael later that evening. By the time we all rolled out, four had decided to bravely set forth and do the Nicasio ride (a 70+ mile, Level 3 difficulty ride), thanks in part to Mike who convinced the McLaren Lodge staff to kindly produce the copies of the route map he already had. The remaining seven of us opted to ride the shorter and easier Tiburon Loop, the same route I took on my first group training ride. Compared with most rides I've been doing, we definitely took a leisurely ride today, complete with a long lunch in Tiburon. Ah, nothing like a crowd-free Boudin's Bakery to enjoy some clam chowder in a bread bowl. Wow... this is training?? Meanwhile, Team Wanka's Lisa Müllerauh reported her Nicasio breakaway group didn't get back until dusk given their late start and a puncture on one of their group's bikes early in the ride. That made for two successful, highly enjoyable group rides today that shows: when the itch strikes to ride together, the family goes for a ride. On the calendar or not, in the company of a training leader or not, we get out there and ride together.
