Vacation's Murder on a Training Body

June 04, 2001

How's this for a break in the action: 7 days, zero miles of biking. All last week, I was on holiday with my wife. She glared at me for even suggesting that I was going to bring my bike along for the trip.

So for the first time in years, I had a bonafide vacation in the Big Apple. We visited with family and friends, met our new nieces and nephews, drank [alcoholic beverages, wouldn't you know] most nights, ate heartily, stayed out late, slept in and casually milled about town otherwise.

We got back two days ago, just in time for me to see many of the folks I've met on my Bay Area training rides take off for their own AIDSRide journey to L.A. In fact, I spent much of the morning and early afternoon yesterday standing near the junction of Highway 92 and Highway 1 in Half Moon Bay just cheering the riders on. I was so happy to see a lot of the people I'd made friends with on my rides embarking on their trip, but equally regretful to have not joined the California AIDSRide this year so I could be with them for the next seven days.

For the while, I'm back to solo training. Today marked my first road ride in over a week and a half (before vacation, I cross-trained a bit and rode my mountain bike). While I rode the typical 45 mile hilly route I almost always ride when I'm on a solo ride, this ride nearly killed me. All the while I couldn't psych myself up to devouring the climbs to which I've grown accustomed; rather, my slightly out of shape lower back constantly got the better of me. The torture was harsh payment for the booze, the heavy Cuban dinners and even social cigarettes (why heavens yes) of the week last.

I miss being in the company of other training AIDSRiders, but soon hope to resume group training with others who may be doing other AIDSRide events as well.
