![]() A cheering squad on Day 4 of California AIDSRide 8 |
Closing Ceremony & Cheering Station Details for Northeast AIDSRide 7 Announced July 03, 2001 Closing Ceremonies in Boston will happen between the hours of 3-5 PM on Sunday, 7/22. Tentatively, the ceremony is set to kick-off at 4 PM. The area designated for the ceremony stage is at the corner of Charles and Beacon Streets. I'm told the closing ceremony set-up will be very prominent and obvious, so nobody will be able to miss the location. Finding parking in this area on any given day is sort'a like pulling teeth -- perhaps a hundred times worse during a parade, so you're strongly urged to park away from this area and walk to Charles and Beacon. Once closing ceremonies are completed, there will be designated areas for all riders to meet with family and friends. Look for the large black letter that correspond to the rider's last name. Tears in eyes from a closing ceremony I can only imagine, I'll probably hug everybody in sight at the 'E' meet/greet station. I hope to see some of you there. *** The cheering stations listed below are simply suggestions where friends and family can gather to cheer Riders along in their journey. The event producers have not secured private use permits for these locations. They are however, all locations that are on City or State PUBLIC property. DAY ONE - Bear Mountain, NY to New Haven, CT Opening to Pit 2 The only opportunity for a cheering station along this part of the route is the picnic area of Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park along Rte 301. It is located just south west of the main camping area. Pit 2 - Lunch Folks can gather at the Putman Plaza shopping center on Rte 6 in Carmel. The center is on both sides of the road, although the Left side has more room, and the McDonalds. Danbury Park-n-Ride just inside the Connecticut border coming from Brewster, NY. It is near the entrance to I-84. This is shared by commuters, so please be courteous to their needs. Lunch to Pit 3 Danbury, CT - Rogers Park @ the War Memorial. Riders will make a left on to Rte 53 from Main Street. Please do NOT park on Rte 53 or Main Street to assist in good traffic flow. Pit 3 to Pit 4 Shopping Center at the Corner of Church Hill Road and Queen Street, Newtown, CT Pit 4 to Camp Shopping Center on Rte 34 in Derby, CT. There is a K-mart and a Burger King on the corner. This is on the left hand side of the road, but plenty of space for friends and family. Riders will be making a left turn on Sodom Lane from Rte 34. DAY TWO - New Haven, CT to Preston, CT Camp to Pit 1 New Haven Town Green - located in the center of town between College and Church Streets on Elm Street. A GREAT spot for those morning risers to come wish the riders a safe journey as they begin their day. East Shore Park, East Haven, CT on Woodward Avenue. A beautiful site with plenty of parking inside the park and just off of the Long Island Sound. Pit 1 to Pit 2 Young's Pond Park on Blackstone Avenue in Branford, CT. An out of the way spot on a quiet windy road, but great place to take the dog. Town Green in front of the Lutheran Church in Madison, CT on Rte 1 just west of Rte 79. On the left hand side, but really shady. This is definitely a location that is beautiful, but again not permitted for this purpose, simply public property. Pit 2 to Lunch Clinton, CT - the front entrance to the Indian Reservation Recreation Complex on Rte 81. Those who wish to cheer from here will need to park inside the complex and walk down to the front grass area. Pit 4 to Camp 2 Devil's Hopyard Park picnic area, East Haddam, CT on Hopyard Road - This is a beautiful site!! Friends and family can come early and pack a lunch and enjoy a nice picnic themselves while they wait for you to ride by. I would advise that they come early as to not be on the roads with the Riders. Although the park is absolutely gorgeous, the roads are also VERY narrow and the less traffic the better. DAY THREE - Preston, CT to Cumberland, RI Camp 2 to Pit 1 Gales Ferry Shopping Center on Rte 12 in Gales Ferry. On the left hand side, but lots of space to come early and root on the Riders on their longest day. The route also covers a lot of Rte 184 (Gold Star Highway) from Gungywamp Rd to Rte 2 and there are lots of shops and parking areas to cheer from. Pit 2 to Pit 3 Tuckertown Park in South Kingstown, RI. The riders will be turning Left (North) on to Ministerial Road from Warden's Pond Rd. Gather at the corner of the park. Pit 3 to Lunch Wickford Junction Shopping Center in North Kingstown, RI. This is a busy shopping center, but there is some grass in front along Rte 102 and the Riders pass right on by. Lunch to Pit Stop 4 George B. Slater Memorial Grove - along Narragansett Parkway in Warwick, RI. This is a very beautiful and VERY small park along the Providence River. Again, it is a public space. Pit Stop 4 to Pit Stop 5 India Point Park - Providence, RI. This is tucked away along the Providence River just South of I-95. Blackstone Blvd between Laurel Avenue and Alfred Stone. This is a beautiful tree-lined green that runs down the center of Blackstone Blvd. The Riders will be heading North. DAY FOUR - Cumberland, RI to Boston, MA Camp 3 to Pit 1 Wilkins Four Corners Shopping Center - Plainville, MA. This is at the corner of Rte 106 and Rte 152. The Riders will be turning Left (North) on Rte 152 from Rte 106. Lunch to Holding PTC - parking lot on Kendrick Street in Needham, MA. It is Sunday and the business is closed, but there may be a few employees, so be courteous. Closing Ceremonies ALL family and friends are encouraged to meet riders at the Parade Grounds in the Boston Common following Closing Ceremonies. See above for closing ceremony details. |
